Cells

Open the cell menu

A cel is the intersection of a frame and a layer in the timeline. On mobile, double-tap the cel to open its menu; on desktop, right-click it. Desktop double-click behavior depends on the Double Tap to Open Menu setting and may open cell properties instead.

  • Copy Cell / Paste Cell: copy at the source cel, then select the destination cel and paste from its menu. Use the corresponding multi-cell commands for a selection of cels. To copy into the next frame, select that destination explicitly before pasting.
  • Delete Cell: clear the cel's content without deleting the frame itself.
  • Inheritance: reuse the preceding source cel's artwork instead of making an independent pixel copy.

For canvas pixels, entire frames, or whole layers, see copying and pasting content to choose the matching operation.

Advanced cell workflows (v1.29.2+)

  • Move cells: use the Cell Move tool to shift cels efficiently across timeline content.
  • Cross-file paste: copy timeline cels in one project and paste at the target cel in another. Use layer copy and paste when you need a whole layer.
  • Additional frames and layers: timeline cel paste can append frames or drawing layers when the pasted range extends beyond the destination's existing timeline. This does not clone the source layer names, groups, or properties. Check that the target layer type matches the copied content.

note

Painting on an inherited cel edits its shared source artwork. Inheritance is not an independent copy.

Inherited Cell Position and Animation (iOS R60+, Desktop & Android v1.32.1+)

An inherited cell normally shares the pixel content of its source cell. You can now give the current inherited cell an independent position offset without changing that shared source.

  • Local Offset moves only the current inherited cell. The Move Tool still moves the shared source by default.
  • Move Following applies the same offset through the continuous inherited cells before the next solid cell.
  • Cell Properties lets you view, edit, or reset the position offset. Offsets can also be reset individually or in batches from the timeline Cell menu.
Apply a local position offset to an inherited cell

Inherited cells also support independent Position and Opacity Keys. Use Position Tween or Opacity Tween from the Cell menu to generate intermediate values according to frame duration. Position tweening supports straight paths and curved paths shaped by three or more Position Keys.

Animate inherited cells with position keys and tweening

Turning off inheritance preserves the currently displayed content and position so you can continue editing from that state. Unlocked cells on hidden layers can also be deleted, cut, pasted, moved, flipped, switched in or out of inheritance, or have their offsets reset from the timeline. Cell Properties remains available read-only on locked layers.
