How do I reorder layers and frames?

Use the timeline headers to change the order of layers and frames. To move pixels on the canvas, see moving selected content.

Reorder a layer​

  • iOS and Android: press and hold the layer name until dragging starts, then drag up or down. Use the name area, not the eye icon.
  • Windows and macOS: click the layer name to select it, then drag from the border of the selected range in the layer headers without holding Shift. Dragging inside the range selects layers instead of moving them.

Release at the insertion indicator above or below the target row to change the order.

Move several layers together​

Layer multi-selection is a continuous range, including every layer between its ends.

  • Mobile: open the first layer's menu, choose Select, then tap the layer at the other end of the range.
  • Desktop: drag across the layer headers to select a range, or use Shift-click to extend it. A normal click resets the selection to a single layer.

Check the highlighted range, then move it with the platform's gesture above. On desktop, release Shift before dragging the selection border.

Reorder or group?​

The drop position determines the result:

  • At a row's top or bottom edge, the layers are reordered.
  • Inside an existing group, the layers move into that group.
  • In the middle of a regular layer's row, a new group is created containing the target and the moved layers.

Follow the drop indicator to avoid grouping layers when you only want to change their order. See the layer guide for examples.

Reorder frames​

Use the frame headers, not the clip strip. On mobile, press and hold a frame header, then drag left or right. On desktop, select the frame first, then drag the selection border without Shift; dragging inside selects a frame range.

Multiple frames also form a continuous range. Select that range before moving it and check the insertion indicator before releasing. See the frame guide for frame and clip operations.
