How do I add a new layer from the timeline?

Use the timeline's layer menu to add a drawing layer:

1. On iOS or Android, double-tap the layer name. On Windows or macOS, right-click it.
2. Choose New Layer. The new drawing layer becomes the current layer.

When the target is a regular layer, the new layer appears above it. When the target is an expanded group, the new layer goes inside that group. A collapsed group is treated differently: the new layer is added above it.

On desktop, Shift+N is the default shortcut. If you have changed the binding, use the shortcut shown in your settings. If New Layer is missing from the menu, exit layer multi-selection and open the target layer's menu again.
