How do I cancel a selection?

While the selection tool is active, tap once outside the marquee to deselect. This works when the selection mode is set to Replace (the default) because tapping an empty area replaces the selection with “nothing.”

If you have already switched tools, tap Cancel Selection in the tool options bar at the bottom of the screen. The button clears the selection without affecting your artwork.
