Blend modes

Blend modes are available on layers and groups, letting you control how colours interact with underlying content. Refer to external references such as Apple’s Core Image filters or Clip Studio documentation for in-depth explanations.
Clipping masks
Clipping masks limit the visible area of a layer to the opaque content of the layer beneath it.

Groups support clipping masks as well. For additional background, consult Photoshop’s documentation.
Clipping masks, opacity, and blend mode adjustments are lost if you merge layers.
