How do I enable auto-save, and what are its limits?
Applies to: iOS, Android, and desktop.
- Open Settings ▸ File & Storage ▸ Auto Save and enable it.
- Set Auto Save Interval to 5–30 minutes.
- On desktop, if a new document has no save location yet, save it manually once and choose a location. Auto-save skips documents that have no save path.
Scheduled auto-save is off by default, with an initial interval of 10 minutes. Your saved preferences may differ.
When do I still need to save manually?
Auto-save saves documents with changes. Its behavior when you switch apps depends on the platform:
- Desktop: switching to another window does not pause auto-save while Resprite is still running.
- Android: the auto-save countdown pauses in the background and continues when you return.
- iOS / iPadOS: scheduled auto-save stops in the background and starts a new countdown when you return. The countdown advances only while the document has unsaved changes.
On iOS, opening a menu or entering the background can also trigger a save, depending on whether the document has changes and how much time has passed since the last save. These saves are separate from scheduled auto-save: turning off that setting does not disable every automatic save trigger.
Manually save important changes before closing Resprite or leaving it in the background on a mobile device. Edits since the last completed save can still be lost if the app closes unexpectedly.
Is auto-save a backup?
Auto-save updates the current file, just like a normal save. It does not keep a separate version for every edit. When you edit an image directly on desktop, saving still uses that image format and does not preserve editable layers.
To keep a particular state, make a separate .resprite backup. On iOS, Safe Zone can also retain recent saved versions, whether scheduled auto-save is on or off.
