How do I import a GPL or RPL palette?

Open the artwork that will use the palette, then open Menu ▸ Palette and choose Load RPL/GPL file on iOS or Import RPL/GPL file on desktop and Android.

Import into the current artwork

  1. Select the .gpl or .rpl file.
  2. For GPL, check the layout preview and set the number of colours per row. RPL preserves its saved swatch positions.
  3. Choose Replace to replace the current palette, or Append to keep its colours and add the imported swatches below.

If you previously enabled Always replace without asking, external palette imports can skip the Replace/Append question. Turn off Always replace when importing to current file in the palette settings to choose again. Palettes generated from images still ask how to apply the colours.

Importing changes the palette, not the pixels already drawn. It does not map the artwork to the new palette, even with iOS Auto replace enabled. See indexed colour and recolouring. To reuse a palette in other works, see the Palette Presets Manager.

Download a palette from Lospec

On a Lospec palette page, open the download options and choose GIMP .GPL. Import that downloaded file using the steps above. If you only have a palette image, use image sampling instead.

If the file will not import

  • Check the download. A saved webpage or an HTML error page is not a GPL palette. Download the GIMP .GPL file again; renaming a webpage cannot convert it.
  • Check the full extension. If the file really contains GPL palette data but is named palette.gpl.html, remove only the extra .html. If you are unsure about its contents, download the GPL file again first. On iOS, use the Files app to check the complete filename, then touch and hold the file and choose Rename.
  • Check that the file contains valid colours. An empty, incomplete, or damaged download may not import. Try downloading it again. If the problem continues, contact support with the source link, filename, device, Resprite version, and any error message.
